Legislators using the gut-and-amend process have given us some dreadful laws over the years. This year is no different. Assemblyman Jim Cooper, D-Elk Grove, is pushing his AB 2835, which would mandate that all public employers orienting new employees allow time for a one-on-one, face-to-face sit-down with a union representative to make a pitch for union membership within four months of hiring, during work hours. The bill passed the Senate Appropriations Committee and is heading for the Senate floor, where it should die a quick death. If the Legislature can’t see fit to kill this turkey, Gov. Jerry Brown should veto it immediately.
