Director Robert Kelley gives the two-hander a grace and sweep that’s delightful, and both actors are downright charmers. The tale still spins its wheels, especially in the middle of the “he says, she says” dalliances, but there’s an innocence to this staging that is sure to please lovers of coming-of-age romps. Certainly, there’s no denying it is beautifully sung. Meet the debonair Jervis Pendleton (Derek Carley), a mysterious benefactor in a top hat who decides to bankroll the education of pretty young orphan Jerusha (Hilary Maiberger). She only spots his shadow, tall and spindly like a spider, but he’s so enchanted by her that he plucks her out of a dreary orphanage and thrusts her into the Ivy League. He foots all her bills as she learns Latin, goes to her first ball and discovers her voice as a writer.

ReDiscover, the Los Angeles art and ecology collective, is bringing “World of Wonder,” a smaller version of its art from trash installation that was part of Santa Monica’s Glow festival in 2008, and the Art Ark Gallery is presenting “Ark,” a large-scale collaboration between metal arts sculptor Valerie Raps, Art Ark’s resident curator, and Judy Roberto, the director of the puppet theater at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. The festival invited more than 30 artists, designers, engineers, computer programmers and academic and corporate research programs to put on displays. Installation began last weekend, and the public is invited to watch the creative process through Tuesday. The exhibit will then shut down for a day before reopening to public (tickets or festival passes required) next Thursday.
