At this year's CES you'll hear plenty of talk about driverless cars, connected homes and the internet of things. (Yes, we promise IoT, perhaps the buzziest of tech trends, is more than just hackable baby monitors and $400 internet-connected juicers.). Here's the technology that will drive all of those innovations over the next decade: 5G. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic. VideoLAN, a non-profit organization based in France that releases VLC as open-source software, has sidestepped the licensing issue entirely with H.264 in the past, and now with HEVC, too, "European and French law does not consider 'software-only' patents as valid," said Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of the VideoLAN Organization, told CNET, "As we are doing iphone case underwater software only, not hardware, and we don't make money, we don't license those."For its HEVC codec, VideoLAN has drawn upon another open-source effort called OpenHEVC, Kempf said..
Vitesse expects little improvement in the December quarter, but sees a gradual recovery during the 2002 calendar year. The communications chipmaker says the cuts will not affect its financial estimates, which include a gradual recovery during 2002. The cuts, announced late Tuesday, were made across all worldwide divisions of the Camarillo, Calif.-based communications chipmaker. Damian Dinning, the man behind the 808 PureView 41-megapixel camera phone, has decided to take a job at Jaguar Land Rover, where he'll play a key part in its connected car division. Which is a bit of a blow for the floundering Finnish phone firm. Dinning joined Nokia in 2004, after working at Minolta UK and Eastman Kodak, bringing a wealth of photographic knowhow with him. He was instrumental in bringing about the Nokia Lumia 920, which features a PureView sensor, but it's nowhere near as ridiculous as the 808 PureView's. It's still one of the best camera phones out there, though.
