In addition to appearances by four performers featured in main stage productions later in the 2015 season (Daniel Cilli, baritone; Jose Hernandez, tenor; Shawnette Sulker, Soprano; Molly Mahoney, Mezzo-Soprano), special guests Seema Shah’s Cree8 Productions Indian dance troupe will join the singers. It all happens on Father’s Day at 3 p.m. For the occasion, conductor and musical director John Kendall Bailey has selected songs for and about dads. The approximately hourlong show’s secondary Indian theme accentuates two chamber operas Bailey will direct in November at the Lesher Center. Gustav Holst’s “Savitri” begins with three minutes of a cappella singing and reflects the 20th century composer’s deep investigation into Indian culture. Jack Perla’s “River of Light” incorporates Indian instruments, including the sitar and tabla, and addresses the contemporary, universal issue of immigrants struggling to retain connection to their native cultures after moving to a new country.
An effort to consider impeaching Democratic Lt, Gov, Justin Fairfax over sexual assault allegations went nowhere as lawmakers pointed out that he denies the charges and that there is no obvious way to commission an investigation, Gov, Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring, both Democrats, are under fire for racist incidents from their past, but they have not been accused of crimes that would rise to the level of impeachment, Because Virginia is the only state to prohibit a governor from ballet shoes painting serving consecutive terms, Northam won’t have to answer to voters again, It’s up to each man to decide his own political fate, and none is budging..
RJ MUNA/ALOZO KING LINES BALLETAlonzo King LINES Ballet will perform a world premiere work bychoreographer and company founder Alonzo King, as well as King s 2013 work Concerto for Two Violins, during the company s spring season April 3-12. I m not one for hyperbole but I can safely say — pulse checked, deep breaths taken — that Alonzo King LINES Ballet s latest program is one of the more exhilarating nights of dance I ve witnessed in a long time. The centerpiece is a new piece titled Biophony, King s work set to a score by soundscape artist Bernie Krause and composer Richard Blackford, built on wild animal and ecosystem sounds that Krause has collected around the globe. Also on the program is a revival of King s Concerto for Two Violins, with live accompaniment from the Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players.

Morgan also conducted a vivacious performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances.” Completed in 1940, the composer’s mercurial, late-life score moves between tender Romanticism and a kind of boisterous modernism, and the orchestra delivered both threads — from the skittish first movement to the big, heart-on-the-sleeve finale — with tremendous exuberance. The central movement was especially fine, with Morgan setting a firm pace in the slightly inebriated waltz themes.
