Isn’t the point of feminism to be able to be who and what you are, not what others ascribe as “appropriate” according to some feminist manifestos, Shouldn’t we be allowed to write our own manifestos, and become who we are as individuals? Not as a man, nor as a woman, but as a ballet shoes book with necklace human being?, Grace Kaplan, Not a feminist, a humanitarian, I don’t identify myself with being a feminist, I identify myself as being a humanitarian, I have always been a person who has and is willing to make other people’s lives better no matter that person’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or disability..
In advance of Saturday’s West Coast premiere of the Saxophone Concerto at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, where Marin Alsop will conduct, I sat down with Adams at one of his favorite restaurants, near his home in Berkeley. I knew he liked jazz, but was surprised to hear him bring up Sun Ra — and to hear him sing Charles Mingus’s famous bass riff from “Haitian Fight Song.”. During a 100-minute conversation, the composer, 67, described his own jazz experiences, going back to the early 1960s when he saw the Duke Ellington Orchestra perform at a lakeside dance hall in New Hampshire, owned by Adams’ grandfather. He spoke about the challenges of composing the new concerto for soloist Timothy McAllister, about their gradually zeroing in on a saxophone sound and style that worked. He also talked about upcoming projects and his ongoing (and thus far frustrating) search for a topic that might inspire him to compose a new opera.
Chorale Director Elena Sharkova explained before the 2010 concert, “You can sing “Twelve Days of Christmas” in all kinds of different ways but the words are always the same, So, since I’m not so familiar with traditions around here, so I decided, well, why don’t we just change the words?”, Scores of ideas for the ballet shoes book with necklace Silicon Valley lyrics were distilled to 12 lines, nearly all of which were updated for 2011, “Five iPhone Apps” and “four Sharks jerseys” became “five Apple stores” and “four Android tablets.”..
