Nearly 25 years after refusing the music industry’s blandishments, Fischer started touring widely with Grand Baton, an improvisation-laced trio led by French multi-instrumentalist JC Maillard. Maillard and Fischer will be onstage throughout “The Propelled Heart,” which features rock hits she’s reinvented with Grand Baton and original songs she and Maillard have created for the production. One key person who made a lot of it happen in Milpitas was Larry Voellger, who died at 62 on July 13. Mr. Voellger and Julie Cherry, who left the Milpitas area two years ago, were the founders nearly two decades back of the Milpitas Alliance for the Arts. The alliance brought together all of the assorted local groups which have brought forth a way for those with a specific art interest to team up with like-minded local residents. It was a great idea, which arrived on the scene at a time when many of the clubs and theater groups were struggling to survive. The Milpitas Alliance for the Arts raised money, it arranged for city-wide events to promote local talents, it brought a new consciousness about public art in our public spaces and even sensitized the city council into creating an official arts commission as well as a special Milpitas Public Arts Committee to oversee a plan to get a percentage of private projects to be set aside for art.
